What counts as an emergency
If water is escaping and you can’t stop it, if you have no water at all, if a drain is overflowing, or if you’ve lost hot water or smell gas — that’s an emergency, and it’s worth calling straight away. The faster we’re on the job, the less damage there is to clean up and repair.
What to do while you wait
A few things can limit the damage before we arrive:
- Shut off the water. For most burst pipes, turn off your main water valve (usually at the water meter). For a hot water leak, there’s often an isolation valve at the unit.
- Switch off power to any area where water is near electrical fittings, if it’s safe to do so.
- If you smell gas, don’t use switches or flames, turn off the gas at the meter if you can, and ventilate the area.
- Move what you can out of the path of the water.
